CHRISTOPH PAECH Director at SBP, Stuttgart, Germany He is director at schlaich bergermann partner, an internationally renowned office of independent consulting engineers based in Stuttgart. sbp’s team of structural engineers has extensive experience in large-scale lightweight structures and lately won the interdisciplinary competition to design a roof for the historic Arena di Verona. The winning design provided for an innovative mechanism, involving a fan-shaped movable cable network and the roofing membrane, that can be fully retracted into the compression ring. Moveable structures can indeed be found in many of sbp’s previous projects. Among these, the most notable roofs are the ones of the Vienna City Hall Courtyard, the National Stadia in Warsaw and Bucharest and the B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver. The lecture will focus on recent developments in the field of retractable membrane structures, which are not only aesthetically pleasing, but also improve the flexibility and sustainability of different venues. JULIAN LIENHARD (Dr.) Managing Director, str.cture GmbH, Stuttgart, Germany He is managing director at the structural engineering consultancy firm str.cture, a company specialised in lightweight design solutions. In addition, he is visiting professor at HCU Hamburg and lecturer at the Technical University of Vienna. He is co-author of the specialist book “Construction Manual for Polymers + Membranes” (Birkhauser ed.). His research focuses on the principles of lightweight structures and in particular on the form-finding process of hybrid structures. His work has been awarded internationally several times and, by following on the footsteps of Frei Otto and Bodo Rasch, he has established his place as a relevant expert in the scientific community. Maibritt Pedersen Zari (Dr.) Senior Lecturer Victoria University of Wellington School of Architecture, Wellington, New Zealand Her research investigates the role of emulating ecosystems in order to change design goals from sustainable to regenerative development. She works with the integration of complex social factors into sustainable architectural design. Her lecture will explore the concept of regenerative design and how cross-semination between ecology, biology and architecture could provide solutions to climatic, biodiversity, and human wellbeing challenges of the future and potentially alter the urban habitats that surround us into softer or more organic and symbiotic environments. NORIHIDE IMAGAWA Professor, School of Architecture, Tokyo Denki University, CEO at TIS&Partners, Japan Norihide Imagawa is one of the leading seismic design professional in Japan; he defines himself as a surgical architect, actually: “if the performance of the material lives in the framework and form, architecture will have a long life”. He is the designer of more of 2.000 projects realized around the world. Among them, the Hakone Open-Air Forest Museum Net, an organically shaped playground equipment made by knitting nylon rope of different colours, which technology has been applied to different context successfully, e.g. Net Art in MACRO, 2013. He is also the developer of CO2 Eco-structure, an eco-material designed to prevent global warming by absorbing CO2 and discharging O2. METTE RAMSGAARD THOMSEN Professor, Head of Centre for IT and Architecture - CITA Royal Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen, Denmark Her research intersects between architecture and computer science, with a special contribution on reintroducing knitted fabrics into tensile structures. Within the CITA group, she pioneers experimental projects that show the potential optimisation of CNC-knitted fabrics, which makes these textiles go beyond traditional tensile skins and makes them perform one more function. The lecture will focus on how these seemingly-soft knitted skins can be paired with bending-active elements to achieve very robust tensile architecture. Jan Knippers (Prof. Dr.-ing.) Head of the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design - ITKE, University of Stuttgart, Germany His interest is in innovative and resource-efficient structures created at the intersection of research and development and practice. Since 2014 Jan Knippers has been the lead coordinator of the DFG collaborative research centre TRR141 Biological Design and Integrative Structures, a collaboration between the Universities of Stuttgart, Tübingen and Freiburg. He is a member of national and European code committees for fibre composites, namely CEN/TC 250/WG 4 “Prospect for New Guidance in the Design of FRP”. He is author of several books, numerous scientific publications, is a member of various advisory boards (i.e. German Science Foundation) and is frequently invited to speak at national and international conferences.
